Who, What, Wear: 69 By-the-Pound

When Kealan Sullivan was 22, she never wore the same thing twice. The 69 Vintage owner would throw together an outfit at Value Village, trash it on the town, and toss it in her closet at the end of the night, never to see the flash of a camera again.
An undisclosed number of years later, she's cleaning out that closet—and the basement of her beloved Queen West boutique—to indulge the fickle desires of her fellow girls-about-town. Setting up a second shop at Bloor and Brock, Sullivan is selling castaway clothing so cheap, we're a little worried she'll put her neighbour—Value Village—out of business.
The price of Saturday night style? Fifteen cash dollars a pound.
Of course, you'll have to work a little for a deal that unbeatable. We feel the vintage shopping experience should be akin to digging through your coolest aunt's basement, and 69 Vintage By-the-Pound really is like that: you have to walk down the steps at 1234 (tell me that you love me more?) Bloor Street West to get to the whitewashed warehouse of womens' and mens' (but mostly womens') finds. Last weekend, we spent two hours in the cave of treasures and emerged with a black slip dress, slouchy cream cardigan, nineties-tastic plaid crop blouse, ruffle-shouldered magenta stunner, champagne corset top, and two skinny belts—all for $33.00, or roughly the price of a one-hit wonder of a sequined t-shirt from H&M.
Laden with lovely things, our wallets barely lighter, we stood dazed in the outdoors. For a moment, we considered keeping our new favourite shopping spot underground. Do the tasteless masses really need to know about this? Can't we just keep it to ourselves and our friends... that is, the ones who don't wear our size? But it's spring, it's gorgeous out, and we're feeling remarkably selfless. So go. Shop, spend, learn to love the scale again. You're welcome.
69 Vintage By-the-Pound is open every Thursday–Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. When you weigh in, don't forget to scribble your name on the email list for updates (including the word on their opening party, date to be determined).
