Pass the Buck

0430_ttcwait.jpgBecause nothing says "I'm sorry" like cash in hand, the TTC has just announced a fleet of refunds for all day passes, metropasses, weekly passes, GTA passes.

As repentance for that whole surprise strike thing, owners of an adult metropass will get $7.50 back (or $7.00 for those with the Metropass Discount Plan); those with an adult weekly pass will pocket $9.50; and those with a day pass for April 25 will get $3.00 for two hours of non-use. There are other discounts for students and seniors, as well. The refunds aren't much, but they're something, and they all reflect a full discount for the service denied.

To claim your money, turn in your pass at any ticket collector's booth, or at the Metropass Discount Plan office at the TTC headquarters (1900 Yonge Street, at Davisville) from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Whichever option you choose, you've got until May 30, 2008 to get back what you're owed.

I'm just worried about the tax receipt. The Metropass is the tax receipt so if we turn it in then we won't get our tax refund.

From the press release: "If riders are planning to claim a federal tax credit, they must sign the back of the pass, and make a photocopy of both the front and back prior to turning in their pass. If a rider is audited for a transit tax credit claim, Canada Revenue Agency will accept a photocopy, with signature, of TTC passes for April."

Thanks. But really, who wouldn't be planning on claiming a federal tax credit, right?

Agreed, Maria. Thanks for the tax claim info David.

If I submit my metropass though, my collection will be incomplete, and i will not be able to take a photo like this in december: http://www.flickr.com/photos/bomb_tea/349828730/!

Arieh, the link is wrong. Also, I guess you'll have to decide what is more worth it, $7.50 or the pictures. Then again, you could take the picture of the photocopy and make it even more interesting, hah!

Can I apply my $7.50 towards subway expansion? I'm not sure it'll cover a new subway station north of Finch, but it's a start!

Hey Maria for some reason it included the exclamation in the link - here's the photo...

Let's take all the refund money, and use it to buy a county-fair style dunking chair. Put union head Bob Kinnear on the chair, and let irate TTC passengers whip baseballs at the target. Instad of filling the dunking tank with water, fill it with jagged-edged worthless Metropasses. That'll learn 'em!

i'm loving the picture with this post...even the dog in the old man's lap looks depressed....torontoist, why don't you launch a caption contest for this picture...something like: "ride the rocket to..." readers fill in the blanks ...so when are we starting that riders union you were talking about...i can't wait to strike back...

I tried to get the refund at Bay Station -- and was snarled at by a surly ticket collector who claimed he had 'no idea' about the refund. With luck the TTC will update its employees on how this is supposed to work.

OK, maybe this is why he had no idea -- the refunds start on May 5th!
