Snappy Answers: Heart Set on Hot Shorts? Better Shape Up

Snappy Answers runs every Saturday afternoon, except when Ms. Snappy Answers is in New York City, as she was last weekend—sorry! Send your questions, be they tough or trivial, to snappyanswers@torontoist.com.

I want to work on getting in shape this summer, and that means signing up for a gym. Any recommendations for a good gym in Toronto? Something not too intimidating to us common folk would be nice.

—Kyle

Ah, yes. If you blinked and missed spring, open your eyes: summer is here, more or less, and this season's swimsuits are definitely on the less side. Time to tone, and fast.

For un-extreme fitness fans, university gyms are a safe (as in, totally non-threatening) bet. Ryerson's Recreation and Athletics Centre is smack downtown (40 Gould Street, at Church) and comparatively cheap: a one-year membership will set you back $450, with no initiation fee. The undergound complex smells like being under a 14-year-old boy's bed, but it's also bright, spacious, and state-of-the-art equipped. And with students away for the summer, you won't have to queue for the cross-trainers.

At the University of Toronto, common folk can pick up Athletic Centre memberships for $605 a year (or $69 a month). A little pricier, but a lot worth it if you're into group fitness: drop-in cardio classes and other activities are free to members.

Should your summer lovin' have you sleeping all over town, sign up for the GoodLife: the Ontario fitness chain has five locations in Toronto, from Union Station to Yonge and St. Clair, so you can sweat off your hangover no matter where you spent the night. Initiation fees and term rates vary; we recommend going for the three free visits and meeting with a fitness consultant to find the best plan for you.

What's up with cool guy and Barenaked Lady Ed Robertson hosting Daily Planet on the Discovery Channel? Was he a Jay Ingram under those leather jackets and ribbed sweaters all this time? I am positively perplexed and find it hard to believe.

—Nik B.

Join Kyle at the gym, and you might see your so-called cool guy watching Daily Planet while hamster-ing it up on the treadmill—cause apparently, that's how Mr. Robertson likes to nurture his keen, lifelong interest in math and science. You'll also get to kill your curiousity about what's under those leather jackets and ribbed sweaters... wait, that's not exactly what you meant, is it?

Anyway, the former Lady's newest gig is a temporary one: the second installment of his two-week spin at guest-hosting is from April 28 to May 2, weeknights at 7 p.m. After that, we're guessing Robertson will return to his acting career. What acting career, you ask? Even we're not snappy enough to answer that.

Ryerson gym tip: good call!

If you can find someone to join with you, you can take advantage of Good Life's Couples Plan and pay less than $420 a year.

If you're in the east end, you could try the Balmy Beach Club, it has a full fitness facility including cardio equipment, free weights, various weight equipment, squash courts, change rooms, showers and saunas plus all the privileges of their social club.
Initiation is $300, plus annual fee of $420.

You don't need to do much to ">get under those ribbed sweaters.
