Wild Toronto: Nighthawk

Wild Toronto is a bi-weekly comic strip about the animals and plants that make a living in our city. Rosemary Mosco makes the comics, and would love to hear your suggestions (in the comments!) on wildlife to be profiled.

you have outdone yourself!
nighthawks rule the night sky..peeert..peeert.
when i was a kid, my dad told me the "wires" made that noise.
peeert peeert!

plus, they live on flat rooves and eat mozzies.
peeert peeert.

Haha, that's funny about your dad. I can't remember how I figured out what they really were. I think my mom, who's a bird geek, might have taught me about them. My weirdest sighting of nighthawks was a huge swarm over the big ferris wheel at the Ex -- I guess they were eating the bugs that were attracted to the night lights?

nighthawks rule toronto's summer night sky.
next time you're on centre island
beware of the black crowned night heron.
just as ugly..nowhere near as pretty a song.
