Four federal byelections are being held today, including two in the Toronto ridings of Willowdale and Toronto Centre. The Liberals are considered to have the edge locally, where the Conservative "We Loathe Toronto" campaign of the last two years hasn't been as well-received as hoped. Happy St. Paddy's Day and remember to get voting before you get drinking.
Conrad Black's son, Jonathan, 30, has been charged with failing to stop after an accident, driving while under suspension, careless driving, and operating a motor vehicle without insurance following a car accident on Thursday. Community leaders are calling for an enquiry into the unusually high rates of arrest and incarceration among Black males.
Rioting against Chinese rule in and around Tibet over the last few days has now taken less than forty or more than a hundred lives, depending on who you believe. Tibet's tactful spiritual leader the Dalai Lama noted that "whether intentionally or unintentionally, some kind of cultural genocide is taking place,” which is kind of like saying, "whether intentionally, or unintentionally, the Summer Olympics are taking place in Beijing this year."
In today's most important news story you don't care about, Bear Stearns, one of the oldest investment banks in the U.S., has avoided bankruptcy by being sold to J.P. Morgan for $2 a share. The deal was underwritten by the U.S. government with money they don't have, so look for the U.S. dollar to continue to plunge, the Fed to continue to panic, and small investors to continue to bend over and say, "please, sir, may I have another?"
Toronto police arrested some thirty people in a drug raid on after-hours club Comfort Zone around 6 a.m. Sunday morning. Police claimed they found a variety of drugs in what they called a "routine sweep," while club management said they didn't sell any drugs, never heard about any drugs, and if there were any they were holding them for a friend who said it was allergy medication.
A Sundins-less Leafs took a 6–2 beating from Buffalo on the weekend, sending them into the zombie zone where they're clearly dead but just keep on skating anyway.

OMG, so wrong, and yet...so hilariously funny.
OMG YOUR BLOG TITLE IS SO DISRESPECTFUL TO TIBET. I call for your immediate resignation and for this FILTH to be printed, shredded and then launched into the sun! I want to VOMIT!!!
I voted in Toronto Centre today.
I just wonder how many people know that the Conservative,Don Meredith, is a pentecostal evangelical pastor and officer with the GTA
Faith Alliance.
Why does Harper keep trying to inflict these pathetic creatures on the Canadian publc?
We'll see how things turn out this election. Last time, 2006, the Conservative came third!
Maybe this time he'll come fourth since I've not
seen or heard a thing about him.
Yet another stealth candidate!
Antiboy - It's "I want to puke," not vomit. Come on, now. ;)
Btw, that was meant in an "in my mouth a little" kind of way.
I agree with David E. (I live in Toronto Centre as well). I am one who likes to keep informed of what's going on, I saw candidates campaigning in St. Lawrence Market and outside subway stations, but never ever heard anything about the Conservative candidate. I wonder what their strategy is, because it definitely is not to get the people to know who they are or what their working plan is, if any.
The Conservatives obviously think that it's a lost cause, that there's no way they will win in Toronto Centre (or Toronto general, for that matter!), so there's no point for them to waste their time and money campaigning.
In Toronto Centre, the Conservatives may as well run a cardboard cutout with the word "Candidate" printed on it, for all the good it will do them. The best chance he has is if he's running late to an all-candidates meeting, which just happens to be wiped out by a meteor (which also happens to take out everything except Rosedale).
In other news, I can't believe Bob Rae is about to become my MP. Sure, he ran Ontario into the ground, but this time it's going to be different.
Seeing as it's St. Patrick's Day, I figured it was a good day to vote Green Party.
The fact that everyone else sucks probably had a little to do with it too.
The conservative party delegate probably ran in the election just so he could put it on his resume. Barring miracles, he never stood a chance.
That depends on whether there's another catastrophic recession. But even if there is, and even if Rae's in charge when it happens, I doubt that he or anyone else will seriously propose to spend our way out of it again.
So, when does he replace Dion, again?
Thanks n0wak! Glad to hear you don't think I suck. (That's what you said, right?)
