Portrait Project: At Your Beck and Call

Sarah Lazarovic—curator of the garage-based Montrose Portrait Gallery of Canada—is painting a portrait of a Torontonian every day. Each Monday, we’ll feature one of those portraits here.

Half the time we don’t even see the cabbie’s face. It’s dark, we’re tired, he’s on the phone, and we want to get home. But every once in a while, you have a good chat, and the driver actually rotates his neck a few degrees so you can meet the person who has couriered your person.

I’m sure we’ve all had our share of crappy cab experiences, — but to be honest, do you not find more often than not that Toronto cabbies are pretty great? Friendly, funny, quirky. I hope I’m not alone in that. I’ve had some of the most hilarious random convos with cabbies — especially really late at night or early in the morning.

yup, i’ve had generally great cabbies. once, i told a cabbie my name and he proceeded to freestyle a song with my name in it for the duration of the ride. sounds creepy, but was mostly hilarious.

Hey, this is probably my favourite of your portraits so far. Good dimensionality on the head! It’s got the essence of a real person, even if you only got a glimpse his face over his shoulder.
