Snow Day

snowday_bader.jpg

Good morning university and college students, and good news: you don't have to go to school today.

The University of Toronto updated its website shortly after 9 a.m. this morning to say that "Due to severe weather conditions on Friday, Feb. 1, U of T Missisauga is closed, U of T Scarborough is closed as of 10:00AM, and U of T (St. George) is closed as of 11:00AM. University buildings are closed and classes and on-campus activities are cancelled, with the exception of essential services." Seneca and Humber also both announced they would be closing for "all day and evening classes."

As of 11:30 a.m., all major universities and colleges in Toronto have followed suit and announced their closing: York is now closed, as is OCAD. George Brown has cancelled evening classes as well, and Ryerson has announced that it will be closing as of noon.

CityNews has a complete list of all school cancellations, including elementary school boards.

Right on the day I have no classes. Dangit.

What about Humber? Y'all forgot about Humber.

Everyone forgets about Humber! I've updated the post to include its information.

Woo hoo!!!

Yeah, alright! Wicked!...I'm still at work, though. (frowny face emoticon)

Ry's given in - they're closing at noon.

Thanks––I just noticed that, too, and am adding it to the post.

So... I had a class (at St. George) that ran from 10:00-12:00 this morning... I slept in and didn't bother going. If the campus was closed as of 11:00, does that mean that all classes starting prior to that time ran for their full duration?

U of T's website has both its memo to staff and its official procedures published online.

My friends had classes that went from 9–10 this morning that went as normal. I couldn't possibly guess what the procedure would be for classes that run through the cancellation time, but anyone missing class this morning has a pretty compelling excuse.

Do (adult) students experience worse weather than those of use with jobs? I had to go to work today, taking the same roads and trains as any student would.

You mean how you aren't expected to go to class in university? :)

tyrannosaurus: The funny thing is that we should be mad, not you. You get paid to be at work. We have to pay to be at school. There goes $70.

The TDSB just closed all schools and is slowly working on sending kids home.

York is fucking stupid. I check the York website at 10:30 AM and they tell me the school is open. I leave home and get to my 11:30 class only to find out the school just closed. Like, really York, you couldn't have told me earlier?

Ryan - I'm not mad, just observing that the weather isn't keeping most people from their appointments.

You pay to go, but it's not like you aren't going to get anything out of it.

Wow, a real snow day. My old high school never even used to close for those, so I was pleasantly surprised when U of T actually cancelled classes. Too bad it was the one tutorial I actually like, and my only class on Fridays. I'm going to go out and toboggan now...

Oh, the memories of dialing 978-SNOW over and over after being up most of the night during storms much worse than today's. It never worked in my favour.
