Family Matters

yeoldefamilyday.jpg
“There is nothing more valuable to families than time together. And yet it seems tougher than ever to find, with so many of us living such busy lives.” So declared Dalton McGuinty on last October’s announcement of a new holiday: Family Day! And McGuinty’s right: work is hard, days off are totally sweet, and families are pretty great!
But we’re curious: are you actually going to be using the holiday for its intended purpose?

In fact, I’m going to a party called “Choose Your Own Family Day.”

    I don’t have a family :(
At least not one in Toronto.

My family is celebrating without me since I am overseas. :(

I barely even know anybody who has Monday off.
My boyfriend’s holidays are negotiated in his collective agreement at work, so he’ll get a different day off sometime later this year.
My little brother has it off school, but he works a part-time job at a gas station, so he’ll be working.
My dad is going on a business trip outside of Ontario…because business continues even though Ontario has a holiday.
My closest aunt has ski lessons. (So I guess her instructor won’t be spending it with his family, either.)
My university’s Reading Week starts Monday, so I’m not even really getting an extra day off. I’m bummed. And I’m probably spending it alone because all the family listed above will be working, and most of my friends from school either have part-time jobs or went away for Reading Week.

questioning the sanctity of family. revealing the fragile lines of our most base relationships. defining what really needs no definition and provides an endless pit of darkness to manipulate.
will their be room for innosense on that world.

I had been set to galavant off to warmer climates for the long weekend, but then my mom called me up and said she missed me and asked if I would spend family day with her and my grandma. So I had to.
Why couldn’t Dalton have called it “Get Drunk And Throw Shit Day” or something equally as fun?

Monday holidays don’t make sense. Who wants to pack up and go celebrate whatever, only to turn around and come back that night because you have to work in the morning? It ends up being celebrated over the weekend, if at all.

Just like everyone else in retail, I dont have it off.
I dont know how this works; I was under the impression it was illegal to be open on a stat holiday, but I guess the math is profits > fine.
