When we think of Disney our minds don't usually jump to wedding dresses, but players in the Canadian bridal industry are hoping you’ll think cartoon princesses when planning your grown-up “special day.” It only makes good marketing sense given that the big, white wedding dream is often one we come up with, or get forced upon us, in childhood. If you manage to keep that (perhaps unrealistic) dream alive, why not be honest about it and dress up in a fictional princess-inspired frock?

This weekend designer Kirstie Kelly is not only unveiling her "Princess Blossoms" collection (for the little folks in the wedding party), but also a brand new line of bridal gowns that correspond with the princesses of classic Disney feature film fame. Among the dresses you’ll find looks inspired by Cinderella (above left), Belle (above right), Jasmine, Ariel, and Snow White—inspired being the key word; there are no mermaid tails, flying carpets, or singing teacups to speak of. If all of this cross-promotional consumerism is making you feel a little nauseated, there is a benevolent angle—Kirstie Kelly has announced that she will make a $125 donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation for each Cinderella-inspired, "platinum" gown sold. Which begs the question: how much does it cost to dress up like a princess?

Although this unveiling marks the first in the Canadian market, Disney-inspired bridal is not a new phenomenon—the designer’s latest collection builds on the success of the line since its debut in April 2007. The notion of adult dresses based on little girl fantasies may be a strange one, but the brides are apparently loving it.

Disney’s Fairy Tale Weddings collection is available at Sposaitalia (4040 Steeles Ave West, Suite 5 in Woodbridge) and includes dresses for bridesmaids, jewellery and veils. There's a public preview on Saturday, February 9 and Sunday, February 10 from 10 a.m.–6 p.m.
