History Lost

Today's blaze was not only devastating to the residents of Queen Street West who now find themselves homeless, but also to the business owners who served the community. Duke's Cycle—second home to many of the city's bicycle couriers—has been run by the same family in the same location since 1914. The owners of National Sound, which operated in the area for forty years and at that location since 1988, don't have fire insurance. Clothing design shop Preloved lost their entire one-of-a-kind spring collection. Suspect Video was the essential destination for fans of obscure and hard-to-find films. Some of the destroyed historic brick and timber buildings were built as far back as the 1860s, and were only recently granted heritage protection.

Torontoist Flickr Pool contributor Kevin Steele stitched together this panorama of the strip in its pre-fire state, photographed in June. Click the image below to see a high-res version.

What a huge tragedy for both the people who called that block home but for all of Toronto. Hats off the the residents and fire department for getting everyone out safe, though that can't be of much of a consolation. So very awfull.

My favourite quote on the vibrancy if the area is from Bovine DJ AL 911, to the National Post:

"The funny thing about Queen and Bathurst is it’s like a cup of coffee. It can start your day, end your day, or ruin your day."

Thanks for covering the businesses that were hit. I live in the area and wanted to know which of the great shops I'd be missing. The news crew got it wrong last night, talking solely about Dukes (which is admittedly a tragedy), the firemen and the cold weather. I was yelling at tube "What about Suspect?! Pizzaiolo?! Preloved?!" Thanks for answering a practical question that the media should have covered, but instead glossed over by saying "historic building, historic building" and showed B&W pics of Duke's.

I hope they rebuild the buildings exactly as they were.

is the reverb/big bop whatever it's called now, gone too??
