Wild Toronto: Kestrel

Wild Toronto is a bi-weekly comic strip about the animals and plants that make a living in our city. Rosemary Mosco of Birdandmoon.com makes the comics, and would love to hear your suggestions (in the comments!) on wildlife to be profiled.

There’s a couple of hawks that hang around over Dundas and Spadina and that general area, that might be worth a comic. Think they’re red-tailed hawks, but I’m no twitcher.

Adorable! Beautiful! Informative! I already can’t wait for next weeks strip.

Art style isn’t bad, but even for only two panels this is pretty blah. Maybe kestrels are just boring though, because the comics on your website about vultures, chickadees and plants were pretty good.

i am intrigued, and now also totally in love with the kestrel! good comic!

Cute. Are they all going to be anthropomorphized?
May I suggest a strip on the coyote?

  • Rosemary Mosco

    Yep, probably red tails!
These are great ideas. Thanks, guys. I want to make sure I get plants and insects in at some point, too.
I guess they will all be anthropomorphized, though if you’ve ever seen a kestrel in full-on redtail rage mode, I’d say it’s pretty much like that, plus more swearing if possible :)

You got a Kestrel’s personality down! Great comic. Look forward to seeing more.

Nice work. I like your stuff a lot and have forwarded it to a few fellow urban wildlife enthusiasts.
I sometimes capture our local fauna in haiku, via my blackberry, and send it to my twitter page.
Here are a couple of recent ones:
    Curious, this sight:
    Red fox running nonchalant
    Down Queen Street at night…
    This morning’s surprise:
    Red squirrel in the backyard
    Eating hot dog buns.
Yes, a RED squirrel! Brave little feller, stepping into the territory of the greys…

Love the premise and the execution. I’m also learning something!

    Rosemary Mosco is the coolest!

Haha, great job! As always with your work, I’m a fan of this.
Also, I want it to be known that I’m a huge fan of your art style. It’s very fluid. Also, the black & white means you can engrave it onto an iPod, or a flask! =)
