School Mayhem Revealed, Other Hillary Dead, Gas Getting Pricier

The Falconer report on violence in Toronto schools talks of a "culture of fear," saying that many students bring weapons to school, and many crimes go unreported. Some of the basic recommendations to fix things include more social workers and after-school basketball, fewer suspensions, more diverse teaching staff, and gun-sniffing springer spaniels to roam the halls.

Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealander who was the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest, has died at the age of 88. In spite of his historic climb and other accomplishments, including much time and money spent on conservation and helping the people of Nepal, Hillary described himself as "a man of modest abilities." Celebrities sure were different back then.

Several people were injured when an Air Canada flight from Victoria to Calgary rolled and dropped without warning before making an emergency landing in Calgary. Early reports suggest that the pilots lost control of the plane when automated systems failed suddenly. Hopefully this isn't the first salvo to be fired in the War of the Machines.

Economists at CIBC World Markets say that gas prices will soon hit $1.50 a litre. Best solution is to get all your driving out of the way now now so you won't have to do it when it gets expensive.

The premiers of Ontario are accusing Stephen Harper of playing politics by linking a promised $1 billion in aid to passage of the government's budget. A politician playing politics? Shocking!

"The premiers of Ontario are accusing Stephen Harper of playing politics by linking a promised $1 billion in aid to passage of the government's budget. A politician playing politics? Shocking!"

This government wants Parliament to approve spending of tax dollars? The gall.

If the photo isn't of a Toronto school, then it shouldn't be there. To leave it there is to give viewers/readers a false impression of a situation.

The photographer does not mention where this was taken.

A photo of a Toronto school would be more ad rem.

Gas prices: wait until spring...yeah baby!
Hummer and SUV owners...fill `er up!
I love it. I actually know someone who drives an SUV and spends like, 400 bucks a month on gas.

We have more than one Premier in Ontario? Might want to add "and Quebec" to that sentence.

Torontoist knows too much about the shadowy cabal of Premiers who run this province.

Everyone's a critic. The Quebec premier was, uh, implied; it's not my fault you guys didn't get it. However, I changed it anyway.

I don't know where that photo was taken, but I remember seeing North Toronto Collegiate when it was left go to rack and ruin - little wonder the school rolled over and played dead when it was proposed to land condos in their midst, in exchange for a "new" school.

Point of clarification: Aviation uses the term roll to indicate a banking or change along the roll axis of the aircraft's centre of gravity... this is not typically how civiians use the term roll. In layman terms, the AC aircraft did not "roll" in the sense of victory roll or barrell roll. It banked at a higher-than-normal bank angle.

At a high enough bank angle (somewhere around 60-odd degrees, depending on airspeed and angle of attack) the wings stop producing lift. Normal turns are executed with no more than 30 degrees bank angle (this is software-limited by the flight management system, typically) to limit passenger discomfort.
