The Heavy Metal Photo Show

You may remember our coverage of the excellent Vice film Heavy Metal in Baghdad. A documentary following the Iraqi heavy metal band Acrassicauda, we reviewed it at TIFF and called it “one of our top films of the festival” before interviewing one of the directors, Suroosh Alvi.

Although Acrassicauda have since managed to escape Iraq (and then escape Syria) with the help of Vice and many generous donations, the band is still in trouble, "broke and lost in Turkey" as their last band blog put it on October 25th. As a result, Vice is putting on an exhibition of photos (including many metal-themed photographs) from acclaimed photographers Peter Beste, Glynnis McDaris, Jerry Hsu, Tim Barber, Ryan Foerster, Angela Boatwright, and many more at the XPace Gallery (58 Ossington Avenue) to benefit the band.

Beginning tonight with a launch party beginning at 7 p.m., the exhibition continues until December 20 (opening hours between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m.). If you won’t be able to attend, you can also buy any photographs, or just donate to the cause at HeavyMetalinBaghdad.com. We’re particularly fond of Paul107’s diptych Brooklyn Boy Marcy (above), but how could you pass up at least heading along to check out shots such as Peter Beste’s King of Gorgoroth, huh?
