Hero: Toronto Climate Commission

Torontoist is ending the year by naming our Heroes and Villains of 2007––the people, places, and things that we've either fallen head over heels in love with or developed uncontrollable rage towards over the past twelve months. Get your dose, starting Boxing Day and running into the new year, three times a day––sunrise, noon, and sunset.

The Toronto Climate Campaign spearheaded the Global Day of Action on Climate Change that took place in Dundas Square on December 8th of this year. Their site explains that they are "an environmental action initiative that joins the growing international concern for global warming, and champions calls for emissions reduction, renewable resources, green energy and sustainability in Canada and abroad." Without groups like this to organize campaigns to channel public engagement surrounding the climate change issue, it's doubtful that our political leaders would be giving it even the small amount of attention they are. Special note should also be given to WTF (Weather Task Force), an alliance of environmental, labour, and community groups whose members (including Corvin Russell and Brennan Louw) organized a number of other complementary events.
