BLAK is the New Black

2007_12_11Blak.jpg

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Last time we checked on 178 Bathurst Street, it was just beginning to relive its Bassmint-era techno days with Derrick May at Crosstown, now closed. Since then, things underneath the Queen Street West and Bathurst Street Pizza Pizza have come full circle.

Until 1999, Christian "DJ Unabomber" Poulson operated Bassmint, a famous party spot and afterhours that still conjures memories of sleepless nights for people across the city. Unabomber has once again opened the space, now under the name BLAK.

The opening party, featuring D.A.V.E. The Drummer, was a blast from the past for many who could be overheard remarking, "Oh my god, I haven't been here since it was Bassmint!" Two rooms of sound, all ages nights, upscale bars and a lineup of solid talent for the next six months make BLAK a welcome addition to Toronto's nightlife rennaissance. With upcoming names like Indica from Montreal, Freedom Danish from Halifax, Joe Rowe from Ottawa, Atomic Babies from New York and Toronto's own Barbi, Pashley and Matt Sims, there is no shortage of talent in the place.

This weekend, check out Electro Cute Saturdays featuring DJ's Dingokiller, Milo and Decibel, playing electro all night long. 18+ (yes, eighteen), $10 before midnight.
