Your Politicians At Work: WTF Edition

notinservice_13Nov07.jpg
The proposal: With the U.S. greenback falling in value, Councillor Howard Moscoe wants to ban the use of American coins in parking meters and on the TTC.
The stupid statement: “The city’s going to lose millions if it continues to accept them.”
The upgrade cost to reject non-Canadian currency: $450 per parking meter (there are 3,000 of them).
The likelihood that TTC employees are going to sort through the fare box: No chance in hell.

    How do you enforce this?

  • Marc Lostracco

Well, if you’re a TTC booth collector, clearly the same way you enforce everything else—sigh dramatically when someone passes a load of change through, then scream something unintelligible through that crappy little speaker after they pass through the turnstile. Then, when they look at you in confusion, scream it louder and more unintelligibly, but with greater irritation. Rinse. Repeat.

Oh Moscoe. Why is he still in the public sphere? Get that moron out of here…

As someone who has been stuck with a handful of American quarters in a time of parking desperation, I can tell you that they do not fit into street parking meters.

  • Marc Lostracco

They do fit into the newer solar ones that print the ticket…I noticed when walking by one this morning that they also explicitly say that they accept U.S. quarters.
I was parking on a sidestreet at College recently and there were two old-style parking meters. When I put money in, they didn’t register any time (still expired), and they only accepted loonies. I tried once more in the second one and lost another buck. There was a number to call if the meter wasn’t working, which I called, but it didn’t exist, and then I noticed that it was a privately-owned meter, probably rigged to just steal yer scratch. Grr…

    2.75 for train fare? ouch!

  • paigesix

What, Marc, those green new solar powered ones are what I am talking about. You try and put an American quarter in and the little coin door just shuts!!!
I would, for future parking reference, like to know where these non-discriminatory meters are…
