69 Comes Full Circle

69_kipling.jpg

Beginning today, Monday, November 19, photos from 69––Torontoist's photo-essay of all of the city's TTC stations––will be featured on the TTC's OneStop screens as part of the organization's new project, "Station Portraits."

If you weren't tired of the photos from 69 when they ran on Torontoist all summer in 2006, now you really will be: for thirty seconds every ten minutes or so, the screens will take a reprieve from displaying ads and public service announcements (garbage goblins, anyone?) to show three photos from that week's featured station. Other photographers are encouraged to submit their own photos of stations, to be featured after 69's completion in, well, sixty-nine weeks, in March 2009.

The photos are the latest step in OneStop's Art For Commuters project: photos of TTC stations from different photographers were featured every day throughout CONTACT in May, and since then the screens have hosted short films and "urban motion-poems." Beef with OneStop aside, it's nice that the company is exploring ways to make use of their video screens that don't involve ads. (And, in the interest of full disclosure, it's worth mentioning that we didn't get paid by or pay OneStop for the display of the photos.)

As always, you can view all of the photos from 69––as well as some new ones, appearing every so often for the next year and a bit––in their Flickr collection. If you like spending money frivolously, you can invest in some prints, too.

While this is not the worst imaginable exhibition deal, it comes close enough for discomfort.

69: A photo exhibition celebrating the TTC... supported by a company chaired by the guy who cut provincial funding to the TTC... which forced them to rely more on advertising revenue and open the door to advertising companies like OneStop...

in an upcoming story rosie dimanno gives this exhibit a 2.06 out of 10. then she goes on a tirade about how she wouldn't dare to hock her books in the newspaper. watch for it in next tuesdays star.
