Over on Q107 on Monday afternoon, Max Webster frontman turned DJ Kim Mitchell was sounding quite enthusiastic about Tuesday’s show. It seems that in an effort to bring attention to drunk driving and the negative effects of alcohol, he’s going to have two on-air personalities (Maureen Holloway and Ryan Parker from Derringer In The Morning) drinking throughout his show, presumably getting progressively drunker and stupider as the afternoon wears into the evening. An expert will be on hand to test their reflexes, demonstrating conclusively just how much a beer or two can slow reaction times, driving home the message that alcohol and heavy machinery don’t mix.
Sounds like a great idea, doesn’t it? It sure is. And it was even better 28 years ago when WKRP in Cincinnati personalities Venus Flytrap and Dr. Johnny Fever did exactly the same thing in an an episode called “Fish Story.” The comic turn back then was that Johnny’s reflexes, slow at the best of times, got faster with each additional drink to the bewilderment and then anger of the expert tester.
Is someone at Q107 pulling our collective leg with this gag? Are the staffers there in on the joke or are they so young (or old) that they’ve never seen WKRP? It’s hard to tell at this point. Whatever the case, here’s hoping that Q doesn’t try a turkey giveaway for its next stunt.
Tune into the drunken fun (or bad joke) on Q107 from 2–7 p.m. this afternoon.
