Panoramaist: Toronto Life Square

Contributor Tony Makepeace is taking us for some spins around our city with his fantastic VR panoramas. You can look up, down, side to side, in and out—pretty much every direction but back at yourself, which would be kind of creepy. Say hello to Panoramaist: the Toronto shoe-gazer's worst enemy.

"Toronto Life Square" is an embarrassment.

It really is. At least at the corner of Yonge and Dundas the ads might dazzle people into thinking it looks cool, but the rest of the building is just ugly gray paneling/siding. Walking down Gould this eyesore dominates your view. But at least Ryerson students get to have lectures in movie theatres!

Wow, really great work on the photo. Exceptional clarity for a night scene.

I didn't realize the name had been sold to a corporate sponsor. It worked for Times Square and Herald Square, so maybe in a few years people will say "I'll meet you at Life Square".

Oh, wait, that's just the name for the building formerly known as "Metropolis" - the square is still Dundas Square. Ok, that's just odd.

As for davedave's comment, yes, the building is rather pedestrian after all of the time and effort that went into it. Not exactly on the level of Melbourne's Federation Square, is it? (http://www.federationsquare.com.au/) But then again, Toronto is not exactly on the level of Melbourne these days. Let's not even discuss Melbourne's trams vs the TTC streetcars...

Here's Marc's article about the name change. "Metropolis"/Dundas Square became Toronto Life Square in April this year.

Actually, David, St. Joseph Media only purchased naming rights for the building at the northeast corner of Yonge and Dundas, formerly in development as "Metropolis." Dundas Square is still Dundas Square (or more formally "Yonge-Dundas Square").

In fact, according to Posted Toronto, the local BIA is rather pissed off by the misleading nature of the name "Toronto Life Square."

How perfectly confusing.

..yet another example that our councillors and city staff have no idea what they are doing. why copy the ugliest, kitchiest place on earth...i.e. times square and replicate it in toronto, don't we already have PLENTY of bad architecture...and bad taste??? as for the name...don't be surprised if a year from now they'll change it to "kentucky fried chicken" square....
