Feist Wins
An excuse to post Feist's "1234"? Yes, please.
In October, i (heart) music asked 30 music bloggers across the country––Torontoist included––to rank the 10 hottest Canadian bands in 2007. What defined "hottest" was up to each panelist to decide; we figured it meant "rank good bands by their popularity," and voted accordingly. One month later, with 150 bands receiving nominations, i (heart) music announced the top 33, with Feist edging out the Arcade Fire by just one point for the top spot.
If last year's list belonged to Toronto, this year's is certainly Montreal's: the city has twelve bands that call it home (and seven of the first twelve), while we've only got nine on the list, plus a handful of stragglers from places that kinda maybe count as Toronto, like Dundas and Hamilton. It doesn't help that some of the biggest local names from last year's list––the top-placing Final Fantasy, Broken Social Scene, Born Ruffians, Metric, to name just a few––all failed to place this year, probably because the voting Montreal bloggers were all grumpy about being beaten so handily last year. Next year, maybe? Your city needs you, Mr. Pallett.
The full list is after the jump, or you can hop on over to i (heart) music to see the list with commentary from the "esteemed" panelists. Hey, we're esteemed!

Ha! With all the publicity and media blowjobs that Tokyo Police Club have been getting, I'm utterly shocked that they're 10th.
Good-no, great!-to see that Arcade Fire wasn't first. The most overrated band ever to come out of Canada. Yuck. Feist is definitely deserving of that top spot.
And wow, what a surprise! Joel Plaskett makes it onto the list... hooray!
I saw Tokyo Police Club in concert once, and didn't really enjoy it. It's too 'jock' for me.
Feist certainly blew up. I don't like her, her image, or her music, but she certainly blew up.
Down with these lists!
All they do is start the, "I can't believe Band-X made the list, Band-Y is so much better." argument or the usual "Your' band sucks, my band kicks ass!"
Tokyo Police Club is from Newmarket. If that counts as Toronto, then any town in southern Ontario counts as Toronto -- giving us 13 of the 25.
Naming them a Toronto band is totally my mistake––I've corrected it to Newmarket now.
Man, and I thought nothing good ever came out of Newmarket...
Did anyone else chuckle at how out of place Neil Young looks on that list? I love him, but it's funny how he's sandwiched in between all these "hot indie bands."
How many of the Montreal are actually from the city of Montreal then?
According to their MySpaces (which is how I got the cities for most of them), all of them.
Funny thing is, Neil Young will probably still be on that list 10 years from now.
