Fire At Jarvis And Mutual, Normal Mailer Dead At 84, Ron Joyce Escapes Plane Crash Unscathed

A massive fire at a townhouse complex on Jarvis Street near Mutual resulted in the death of an unidentified victim on Saturday night. Construction on the townhouses had been abandoned for ten months and the building was being inhabited by squatters, says a resident at the adjacent Radio City condo tower.

Novelist Norman Mailer died this weekend. Kim Ruehl at Seattlest has a nice eulogy: "He was, as most great novelists are, a complete asshole at several points in his life. We should hate him simply for his stand against women's liberation, but doing so would mean eschewing his exceptional, provocative use of language..."

Tim Hortons co-founder Ron Joyce survived a plane crash yesterday when the wing of his private jet hit his private runway at the Nova Scotia golf resort he owns. Nobody was injured, so let's all celebrate with a honey cruller.

The TTC's $92 million Mount Dennis bus garage is six weeks away from completion and soon to open for business! Wait, scratch that: due to the high cost of operating the garage and the TTC's financial woes, the building will sit empty for at least a year.

We're with Posted in saying that this is by far the weirdest story of the day: a security guard in Bangkok, Thailand has been arrested after beating to death eight of his co-workers and severely injuring seven more. Wittaya Jaikhan drove around the city in his off hours, looking for guards who had fallen asleep at their post. "I used to wake them up, but they scolded me. So I've remained enraged since then," Jaikhan told the Bangkok Post.

I too am a resident in said adjacent Radio City tower, and it was indeed pretty scary for a while. I'd never been that close to a fire like that before, and even worse, when I tried to evacuate the building I was in panic mode because I could only find one of my two kittens to bring with me.

Could you please learn Toronto's geography? Or just use one of those nifty online maps to check whether "Jarvis near Mutual" actually makes sense?

Mutual runs parallel to Jarvis, one short block to the west, from Queen north to Maitland, just short of Wellesley. It doesn't help that the Post can't spell Carlton either, but please look at a map!

Hmm...the fire was bordered by Mutual on one side and Jarvis on the other. Does that count?
