Confirm Your Facebook Fandom

facebookfanof.gifFacebook is the shit. Torontoist has a group on it (778 members, what), but everyone's favourite social networking/time-wasting site just unveiled a new feature that allows organizations––be they bands, companies, websites, or whatever else you can think of––to have their own page. If you like what that organization is doing, you can add yourself as a fan, and then you automagically get a neat little box on your profile that says "I am a fan of...", like the one at right.

So, if you like us a whole bunch––so much that you totally want to give us free mini-promotion on your so-important Facebook profile in exchange for our eternal love for you––check us out on Facebook and add yourself as a fan today. Thanks!

Don't...join Facebook? Because that link is about something completely different on Facebook that has absolutely nothing to do with what we're talking about.

It's actually kinda related. The FAN thing is stage one of this multi-platform advertising plan... so first you say you're a fan or something. Torontoist is a harmless example (as you're not a store or purchasable product in Facebook terms) but the idea of the fan app is to get Facebook users to eventually become fans of EVERYTHING they like.

So, you could be a fan of Blockbuster, for instance.

Then when phase 2 sets it, your Blockbuster.com online account will be connected to your Facebook account, as your email addy info is shared between the two, thanks to Facebook's newest addition to the privacy policy.

So then when you purchase a movie from Blockbuster.com a little newsfeed blip will come up on Facebook and say "Paige is a fan of Blockbuster and purchased Gilmore Girls Season 7 DVD." This info will also be in the newsfeed on the Blockbuster fan page.

Considering Torontoist is such a fan of the slippery slope argument... well.. this is what ozmic was getting at I think.

Luckily, we have no plans to reveal our readers' Gilmore Girls–watching habits.

I don't mind revealing my Gilmore Girls watching habits. Naturally I stopped watching it when I moved out of the Annex, as it no longer seemed relevant.

"Your favorite bands, businesses, and products are coming to Facebook. Check out Dave Matthews Band, become a fan of (RED), or search for your favorite brands. You can also find out about what your friends like through the new "Fan of..." box on their profiles.

We've also updated our terms of use, including a new section about Facebook Pages. Learn more."

I can't wait to be bombarded with recruitment offers from my friends.

Someone needs to make a boycott application for Facebook. Soandso is now boycotting:...

Tyrannosaurus: I already have been bombarded with recruitment offers from my friends. These are people I actually know that want me to join their fan site. I do not plan to join any of such fan sites, and I hope they don't get offended. I'm just not interested. But I wonder how many more people are getting this type of requests.
