Musicologist: October 29–November 4

This week, emo kids will have a tough choice as they decide between Dashboard Confessional and Jimmy Eat World on Thursday night. Despite our weakness for the genre (and its evil cousin, mall punk), Musicologist recommends The Go! Team that night—their single "Grip Like A Vice" is one of the most fun tracks of the year.

As for other nights, we suggest checking out Josh Rouse and Maria Taylor (the latter is formerly of Azure Ray) on Tuesday and Mum on Friday. If you're a fan of Staggered Crossing, though, you should make your way to the Horseshoe that night, as they play their last show before an "indefinite hiatus" (and we all know what that really means).

Full listings after the jump.

Anyone know if Amy will be singing with Stars?
Gwar and Cradle of Filth...the metalhead side of me says...niiiice.

Ok maybe it's just me, but when did Jimmy Eats World become emo? I would consider them more mainstream rock.

I! love! The! Go! Team!

JEW has always been emo and always will be.

Hooray for Malajube!

I'd classify Jimmy Eat World as being on the borders of emo––a little more emo than the gray area that Death Cab for Cutie occupy, maybe?

Also, the acronym "JEW" for Jimmy Eat World is probably the worst acronym in the history of music. I hadn't heard of it, so when I saw people on Stereogum talking about a "jew album" a few months back, I got pretty confused.

OMG Hanson at the Phoenix.

Jimmy Eat World started out as an emo band alongside second-wave groups like Mineral and Sunny Day Real Estate. Jimmy Eat World morphed into a mainstream rock band, for sure, while the other bands broke up.

And yes, Hanson at the Phoenix. Odd.

I saw an ad for the Hanson show in NOW (I think) and the critic said something to the effect of "The purest rock band in America today."

Um. I mean I know they've transformed and shed their bubblegum roots but that's going a bit far. Well, that's going way too far.

Sunrise files JEW under Punk, if you can believe that.
