Miller Goes West, Elections Ontario Fresh Obsessed, Tory Sweeps Up Mess, Nuit Blanche A Victim Of Its Own Success

2007_10_2CrazyCumberland.jpg

Mayor Miller was in Etobicoke yesterday, trying to convince the people who regularly vote in Ford, Holyday, Nunziata, et al. that new taxes are a necessity. It went about as well as you'd expect.

In an effort to boost turnout, Elections Ontario has put some advance polls in supermarkets. We hoped to write something sarcastic, but upon further reflection, this is a really good idea.

John Tory has essentially killed his public-funding-of-faith-based-schools proposal, promising to hold a (sure to fail) free vote on it if elected. Apparently, he was convinced to change his mind by a woman who approached him after a rally. That and, you know, the fact that his campaign had imploded.

It wasn't just you. Nuit Blanche had too many people this year, and the all-night TTC service sucked. The Mayor and TTC Chair said so themselves.

And some local sports team probably lost some game.

"And some local sports team probably lost some game."

why yes... Toronto FC did loose another game, but for the hundred or so fans who went down to watch them in D.C., the end result didn't take away from the fun.

Parkdale - Red Patch

why are you guys so flip about sports? some people actually care, believe it or not. there wouldn't be an entire section in the newspaper devoted to this if it wasn't the case.

I think the Torontoist policy toward sports has been that we won't do sports coverage unless we can do it in an interesting way that's distinct from how it's covered in the mainstream media.

As for myself, well, I was filling in for Christopher Bird today, and I'd never done a news roundup before. I was pretty much finished, when I looked over the post and noticed that something seemed missing. I remembered that Bird usally includes a sports score as a final throwaway sentence, and—because I know nothing about sports—I decided to send that up.
