Iconic

pandathing.jpgTorontoist commenters now have avatars! If you have a profile (and if you don't yet, why not register?), just go to "Edit Profile" and upload a 100 x 100 pixel image. Then try commenting (on this post!), and bask in the glory of our ever-improving commenting system.

For now, the default icon for registered users across the Gothamist network is a panda, for some reason that we aren't entirely sure of ourselves. (Seriously, we actually don't get it. You're definitely gonna want to change that image.) There's still a bug or two in the system, but, hell, avatars! They are quite literally little bundles of joy.

This is another step in the process of moving away from a free-for-all commenting system to a registration-only one. By the end of the month, we'll have no more "guests." It's a contentious issue, to be sure, about which there's been quite a lot of vitriol, but we can't wait to make the switch, and we really, really hope you decide to take part by taking five seconds and registering a profile.

Here's an example of a comment on Torontoist with the new layout. It is still a little buggy (on older posts, for instance, the comments don't display right yet), but it's not too shabby.

Jen Chung has a thing for pandas. She was swept up in the "cute overload" meme when Rocketboom was still doing "cuteness bites", and something that really stuck was the cuteness of pandas. This was coupled with an early 2006 boom in panda-cams as China and the DC Zoo linked up to provide the world with 24/7 panda breeding news. Something that has always bothered her (and me) is that the DC Zoo, while ten thousand times less awesome than the Bronx Zoo, has the pandas, and "we" don't, except for rare "state visits" from China.

Yup, I think that's our answer :)

I've been waiting at least a week for my registration to be processed:

"Email verification has not yet been passed"

So why's it taking so long?

num 4 - any chance you signed up to a hotmail account? seems they like to reject 40% of mail unless you pay them. junk folder also a place tocheck.

You can email david (or me at neil at gothamist.com) with your email address and your username and he can just check a box in MT.

If anyone is ever experiencing any bugs with anything on Torontoist ever (profile system or anything else), they can always e-mail me and/or Marc. If we can't fix the problem ourselves, we'll forward it on to Neil and the Gothamist crew.

This doesn't look right in firefox at all!

FYI, I had to clear my cache for the avatars to display correctly (both in Safari and Firefox).

Of course you're excited about the switch. It will save The World's Most Paranoid Editors from having to collect IP addresses of guests who criticize the site.

Yeah - that fixed it right up. Thanks!

I just want to see how mine looks.

why is it that i could post as a guest but now all my comments are being held for approval?

#16, I don't know what you mean, but we don't hold any comments for approval...

wait i am logged in as matty and it shows up as guest. this whole thing is screwed.

What? Why the fuck would you change something that's not broken?

Why does every damn site on the net demand registration for no good reason?

user-pic

BlogTO still has anonymous commenting, and I bet they would appreciate more traffic.

I wish I had a more camera freindly face to put on mine, will have to look for something, but will probably use my dog, she's much cuter than I.
MrBlack...I thought you were King diamond for a sec: - )

I'd like to add my voice to those opposed to mandatory registration. It's not just about the 5 seconds, but also about remembering a login (and not everyone can/is willing to just save it to their computer) and about being tracked.

Really, Torontoist, I'd expect better of you.

I understand that some people might not be a big fan of having one more login––and that some of those people don't want to save that data to their harddrives in the form of remembering the login in Firefox or IE or Safari––but I also don't think that is a big enough factor to prevent us from going ahead with the system.

As for "being tracked," I'm not sure what you mean or what your fear around that would be––yes, your comments would be associated with the same name and e-mail address, but there's nothing to say that that name and e-mail address needs to be in any way identifiable.

This new comment registration is like putting on a condom; sure it's safer, but not as much fun.

My only complaint with logging in is the passwords. I hate resuing passwords, so whenever I inevitably forget mine I have to reregister or use the "forgot password" thing.
