We publish a lot of articles on Torontoist, and sometimes it’s hard to keep up. Populist is a weekly recap, appearing every Sunday night, that features some of the coolest, most interesting, most commented, and most recommended posts from our past week.

Let’s not kid ourselves: this time of year is TIFF-heavy, with the festival taking over the city and a whole team of Torontoist staffers writing reviews and covering the fest. For that, we’ll just direct you to our TIFF category, where you can find all of our coverage so far. Life goes on with or without TIFF, though, and this past week saw Torontoist put out fires, introduce two new sweet columns, and try to ward against the chaos that is early September.

• Chris Tindal is the Torontoist All-Star of the week for his Don Valley firefighting.
• Kevin Plummer explored the causes and the effects of the Hamilton-Toronto rivalry in the CFL and the power of the CN Tower as Toronto icon (this week’s most commented post).
• Alexandra Samur talked about the Ontario Genealogical Society’s mammoth and creepy task of transcribing all of the province’s gravestones.
• Marc Lostracco will tell you about the unprecedented success of WiFi, something that involves the internet working without series of tubes.
• Carly Beath and Christopher Bird each launched a new column: Musicologist and Televisualist, respectively. Are we exhausting the -ist suffix? Potentiallyist.
• David Topping checked out Stars and the Hidden Cameras’ free concert for U of T frosh, and featured a gorgeous photo of a phonebooth by teriyakidonut (this week’s most recommended post).
