Ponging for a Cause

2007_09_27_pingpong.jpg
Before all the fuss over Halo 3 there was the video game greatness of Pong. And before that, there was good ol’ fashioned ping pong.
Since 2000, The Dedicated Association of Ping Pong Players has been keeping the table tennis dream alive with bi-annual tournaments, the next of which is taking place on Saturday.
Up to 500 people are expected to attend the event at the Steam Whistle Brewery ,which will feature drinking and socializing and drinking and ponging. The Matt Smith Invitational, as it is properly known, is a bona fide tournament at the end of which a champion will be crowned (complete with fancy trophy).
Proceeds will go to charity partner Journalists for Human Rights, an organization that advocates for better and more reporting on human rights issues in Africa. Events kick off at 5:30 p.m. at the brewery (255 Bremner Boulevard.) and there is still time to register if you have a hankering for some paddling.

Just because PONG existed doesn’t mean it was ever considered great. By and large people were bored within 10 minutes. It didn’t offer much, and people weren’t impressed by its mere existence. Even SpaceWar was better received over all, and it was arguably the first “video game” ever made available to the public.
Sorry, but you can’t sneak a shoddy game reference by me. Ever. I will never allow such blasphemy! Anywho, kudos on the rest of the entry.
