Super Stars

Finally, a Frosh Week concert worthy of U of T.

After years of mediocre bands, increasingly-irrelevant bands, or good bands who underperform, the university brought Stars and the Hidden Cameras to campus for a free concert for students. Loaded with alumni, both bands played better than anyone could've expected for a free show, with the Cameras' ecstatic pop and Stars' lush rock making for a killer lineup. Neither band softened their material: The Hidden Cameras played songs about urination and cum with the same earnestness and joy as they always have, and Stars sang about––as Torquil Campbell put it––"fucking someone to death." (The only exception, with U of T's Mississauga campus's frosh in attendance, was the notable absence of "Mississauga Goddam" from the Cameras.) All the advice for the first-year students from both bands was about not working too hard, but, then, that's what you'd expect from rock stars.

More photos after the jump.

I'm SO glad the concert was enjoyed by all, I sure had a blast organizing it!

Congratulations Vita/Mark (UTSU's Orientation Coordinators) - though I can only shake my head at Torontoist's apparently complete and continuing disdain for my own Frosh concert artist choices. All I can say is, they made sense at the time, and people seemed to enjoy them.

And hey, at least U of T's Orientation isn't being mismanaged the way it was not so long ago!

Luke Stark
2005 and 2006 Orientation Coordinator

"Complete and continuing disdain" is a bit much. I enjoyed each of the last two years' concerts (though I was disappointed a bit with both). This year's was way better than I could've hoped.

Fair, fair. In the context of the history of Orientation at U of T, we organizers felt pleased with what we managed to achieve - but nothing's perfect. And you should have seen the nasty emails from Metric's tour manager complaining about wanting an encore!
