Protest Cuts At City Hall

2007_09_19pool.jpg

A note to Torontoist readers from an artists' group with some impressive collective activist-power:

NO CUTS TO OUR ESSENTIAL SERVICES
because it's tough as hell to swim in empty pools

On WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH, 4-6 p.m. we are calling on ALL MEMBERS OF THE ARTS COMMUNITY AND ANYBODY ELSE to convene at NATHAN PHILLIPS SQUARE to make it clear that we will not tolerate cuts to our essential services and that we support the Land Transfer tax.

IT'S URGENT: the councillors will be meeting on the 20th to discuss this and we need to show our city officials that we are organized and strong in numbers and that we are horrified by the city's deteriorating quality of life.

Please show your concern by attending WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19th!

If you have suggestions for speakers, activities or want to help organize please contact: Heather Haynes, Darren O'Donnell, Lisa Pijuan-Nomura.

In related news, Thursday’s meeting (mentioned in the above notice) to discuss community centre cutbacks and proposed new city taxes was canceled because of "lack of support from Toronto city councillors." So until further notice, the centre of your community is closed on Mondays. Does Council understand what it's saying? The very centres of your neighbourhoods are closed shut, and we don't care enough to hold a meeting about it.

We'll see you at Nathan Phillips Square this afternoon.

If I have read this correctly you want me come and protest in support of raising taxes? Of course holding it from 4-6pm means most of the people already paying taxes are either still at, or on their way home from WORK.
I would also bet that many of the councillors will have already left by that time, what with the nice weather and all.
Some may even be out playing golf with the free pass I`m already paying for.
Very funny.
