Thanks to AEG Live, the same great people who gave us Justin Timberlake tickets to give away in April, we have yet another American cultural phenomenon looking to invade Canada: So You Think You Can Dance.
So You Think You Can Dance comes to the Air Canada Centre on Thursday, November 1, 2007, at 8:00 p.m., and will feature the top 10 finalists from this season (which means, unfortunately, that it will not include the best-named contestant, Jesus). Tickets are on sale today, August 11, and can be purchased through Ticketmaster. Since many of our readers, we assume, are quite spectacular dancers, and thus enjoy watching others dance, we've got our hands on two pairs of tickets to give away.
To win, post a comment and tell us your favourite style of dance, individual dance, or dance step, and why you think it's so great. Really, just name some kind of dance that you like. This means that the routine from "Thriller" is eligible, as is the Robot, as is the entire genre of ballet. Just give us a sweet reason why. (You must, of course, be a registered commenter of Torontoist to win.) The deadline for entries is midnight on Friday, August 17.
If, in the interim, you're looking to get in the dancing mood, may we suggest a little Justice?
UPDATE (August 22): Our winner is Kellstaa, for convincing us that the best dance style ever really is Elaine's awkward shuffling/arm-moving thing from Seinfeld. Thanks to all the entrants!

Really, if we're talking about dance styles, then you can't go wrong with the "Scottish highland dance" routine. Anything that combines bagpipes and kilts has got to be good.
Doesn't Jesus have better things to be doing than competing in a reality show, like blessing America and playing favourites for the Grammys?
My personal favourite style of dance is contemporary or ballet. The movement is so utterly graceful, the dances tell stories from the whimsical to the melodramatic and the requisite body awareness and control is so demanding, I must respect anyone who meets and/or surpasses those expectations. I am not a dancer, and honestly, I had no idea what 'contemporary' was, or the taxing nature of ballet before I got into the show, and I've been utterly enraptured by it.
i love contemporary - there is just something so coporeal and organic about how the body moves with the music in this style - where the two come together so harmoniously - it has to be art. I also think its captures emotion so beautifully.
I always laugh when I see SYTYCD use the word "contemporary"... a term that lost popularity some time in the mid-1980s. Most dancers actually refer to that style as "lyrical".
Me, I like the tap dancing. Don't judge!
Sort of sucks that it's sold out, and it's on my birthday! Haha. Clearly, jumpstyle is my favourite style of dancing. I kid. I love lyrical dance. It's not always graceful, but can be. It's an expressive type of dance as opposed to what people would think it would be (a dance that highlights the lyrics of a song). I also love that different genres of music can be used for lyrical dance. Lyrical is organic and beautiful.
Come on! Its gotta be the moonwalk. Defined a generation (and I'm not talking about the Pepsi generation!). I'd never seen anything like it my MJ first busted it out...
(Pick me! Pick me!)
my personal favorite is the mashed potatoe. brought back to me by john travolta via hairspray. forget sexy, bring the tater back!
Elaine's dance she does on the Seinfeld Episode "The Little Kicks" (Season 8, Episode 4). Enough said. This is the best dance because: 1)George's response to seeing it, "Sweet fancy Moses!", was hilarious and has caused many people to quote this phrase; 2)It has caused many people around the world to attempt this dance as well (available on YouTube for your amusement); 3)The kicks are nothing without the jerking thumbs; and 4)Not only does Elaine use her entire body to perform this dance, there is also a high level of difficulty in performing the movements without causing bodily injury - something she seems to do effortlessly!
Tap, just because I always wanted to learn that and it's something I can do when I'm old!
This is actually harder than I thought. I am so in love with many of the dances I watch weekly on this show that it's difficult to pick one.
I am going to go with the paso doble. I think it is the most exciting and romantic and sexy dance of them all. You have to have tremendous skill and poise to make this dance look as fabulous as it has the potential to look, when it is danced well. The dancers must show such emotion and passion and some, such as Neal and Sabra have done this very successfully. The dance they performed last Wed. was absolutely breathtaking, especially that finale, they made it look so effortless, truly amazing! If the dancing wasn't enough, you can't beat the costumes...they make both the male and female dancers look hot and sexy...definately my fave to watch!
OLE!!
There are so many dance styles that I really am amazed with. Picking one, my most favourite dance style is hip hop. I just love it!!! The dancing and the music just wants to make you get up and dance. I just can't help but smile when I watch it. I like how the movements can be both smooth and concise. Hip hop can be a hard-hitting dance, yet it can also have it's soft moments as well!! It's really an amazing genre.
My favourite style of dance is jive. It's so much fun to do with my husband at a wedding and it's so entertaining and high energy. We would love the opportunity to see the great talent at So you Think you Can Dance in Toronto!!
My favourite has got to be jazz! Especially when the pieces involve interpretation of animal movements. I'm looking forward to jazz interpretations of perhaps less graceful members of the animal kingdom than hummingbirds and foxes - how about our favourite pigeon? I bet one could develop a great story.
