PhotoTO: Progress at the AGO

2007_08_21agogalleriab.jpg2007_08_21agogalleriaa.jpg
Project manager for the Art Gallery of Ontario’s Frank Gehry-designed transformation Mike Mahoney stands on the site of the Galleria Italia, a 450-foot-long sculpture promenade rising above Dundas. Enclosed by moulded glass hanging from swooping beams of Douglas fir, this will become one of the city’s most iconic architectural features and a postcard favourite.

    beautiful photo!

The photo may be beautiful but the AGO is absolutely overwhelming the neighbourhood. Just look at how it towers over the Grange Park. Notice also how the building is far higher than the 3-storey street-wall that is prevalent in the neighbourhood.
It was poorly designed and it is ceasing to be a cultural institution and more of a commercial enterprise. Pity for the Grange neighbours.

I don’t know, considering there’s already one architecturally significant building bounding one side the park (that seems to be generally accepted now), along with a whacking great big (and ugly as hell) apartment building that looms far higher over the park than the AGO will… I can’t see this will really be denigrating the neighbourhood.

It may tower over the rest now, now, but in 15 years it won’t.
