Hulking out in Hogtown

hulksmashtoronto.jpg

It seems like ages ago that calling our fair city "Hollywood North" meant something. Blockbusters used to set up shop on a regular basis and you could stroll through the University of Toronto campus and see pylons, trucks, and signs for a film going by the rather odd name "Good Will Hunting."

So much hooplah and many huzzahs greeted news that The Incredible Hulk would be filming here this summer. A "re-boot" of the interesting-but-flawed 2003 Ang Lee film, this one stars cool folks like Edward Norton and Tim Roth.

Lately, The Hulk (or at least his skinnier, pinker alter ego, Bruce Banner) has been mighty visible around downtown. Nerd News site Ain't It Cool News has a report from "Copernicus" (not the Renaissance scientist, merely a cunning web alias), who accidentally stumbled across filming on the U of T campus. It's all the more amusing because Copernicus was working at Berkley when Ang Lee's movie was filming there and he came upon the set in much the same way.

As Copernicus notes, we Torontonians have become inured to the sight of lined-up trucks and trailers, as they usually signify the filming of a commercial or, if you're lucky, new episodes of Relic Hunter or Kung Fu. So it's quite something when you actually get to see an Oscar nominee like Norton in character––delivering pizza. Copernicus has extensive details about filming at the picturesque Knox College and all around King's College Circle.

We haven't felt such civic pride since catching Mean Girls and shedding a nostalgic tear during the mathletes competition scene, filmed at Convocation Hall.
