Caribana celebrations are still underway down on Lake Shore West and elsewhere in the city, and hundreds of thousands watched today's spectacular masquerade celebrating this year's theme of "Petit Monde." Torontoist was in the mas camps and the parade for a photo roundup, which can be seen after the jump.

Nice shots, Marc!

One of my favourite things about Caribana is how it's the least body-self-conscious event of the year. The mas costumes don't cover much (though they cover enough to still be G-rated), but it's all about all shapes, sizes and ages and nobody there is judging. Fantastic!

I also had one of the best hamburgers I've ever had (at the "Juss 4 You" tent where the barbecue photo above was taken). I don't know where they got their patties and especially the amazing buns, but it was some good, good eatin'.

Moving the peripheral stuff this year to the area around Ontario Place was more logical than the usual Toronto Islands location, as nice as it is.

While I missed Caribana yesterday, I did experience a subway car full of people coming back from it last night and it seemed pretty cool -- except for the two girls who sat directly beside me and kept taking photos of each other with me in the background. That was pretty awkward.

Speaking of Caribana and awkwardness, I highly recommend reading the Star's article if you are in the mood for an awkward recap of Caribana.

Premier Dalton McGuinty and a "raising the roof" Mayor David Miller kicked off the parade, sitting on convertibles with leis around their necks.
During a break in the parade, one woman sitting on the ground shimmied her shoulders and rattled the fence with her hands, screaming, "Shake that booty! Shake that booty!" to a pair of male police officers walking along the street.

They didn't comply.

When asked if he was having a good time, Vaughn Graham, 51, of Brooklyn, N.Y., said, "Mos def, this is my culture. This is how we live. All the nice food, all our music, this is our culture, Trinidad."

He added, "Even white people from Toronto be jumping."

Oh Star! Still, good news: no crime! Maybe people can stop freaking out about Caribana next year...

That was my favourite thing about the Dyke March. I was too self-concious to wear the smallish pink fun fur top I made, and then I showed up and saw women of all sizes parading around in underwear or less and I felt silly for not wearing my top. I'm sorry I missed Caribana. It looked like a lot of fun.
