White Stripes. Free Concert. Right Now.

whitestripes_toronto.jpg

According to an anonymous reader, the White Stripes are playing a free surprise show, right now (3:30 p.m.) at Yonge & Grosvenor. No need to get out yer wallets for tonight's show at the Amphitheatre after all...

UPDATE (4:50 p.m.): Okay, apparently show's done (we think? can anyone confirm? Yep, all done.) If you've got photos, we wanna see them! Upload them to our Flickr pool, or e-mail them to tips@torontoist.com!

UPDATE (July 6, 12:30 p.m.): The Globe has a cool write-up of the concert. They played in the auditorium of the YMCA to a crowd of 25 super-dedicated fans—most of whom were waiting at Union Station for word of a secret show—and some "80 participants in the Grosvenor Street YMCA's summer day camp, ranging from ages 6 to 12." Awww! Golf clap for the Globe! And thanks so much to our lovely anonymous reader who tipped us off in the first place—because of them, we were the only media organization in the city who had anything up about the concert while it was actually happening.

What the hell drew them to Yonge & Grosvenor? They playing on the street or at Money Mart?

i just got back from the show!!!!!!!!!!! hly fuck that was amazing, they let us all in who were standing around the corner without asking anything about being with the Y.
played about 8 track, jack brought 2 kids up to sing their own songs: Wheels on the bus, and I beleive i can fly (with playground lyrics).
Simply fucking amazing. they closed with hotel yorba, played apple blossom and a couple tracks from the new album....

WOW!!! was that ever sooooooooo cool. also they had special t-shirts they were selling for $5 that I assume are special ones (though they may be selling this design at the show tonight.) The shirt is all read with a really cool big symbolic design of a crown and lions.

dman damn damn....i missed it. i got there at 4:40pm and no sign of anythign going on....

awesome that ya'll made it though!

damn damn damn

figures that it happens right next door to my apartment... while I'm at work.

I am weeping at the moment. I totally knew this was going to happen, I just didn't know when/where, and bloody hell if it wasn't the first day of a new job. It breaks my heart into a million pieces.

Their Ocean To Permafrost tour is all about hitting these tiny venues. They've played bowling allies and city buses in Winnipeg, sinking gyms in the Yukon, all that kind of stuff. I'm not a huge fan, but that's hella respectable.

I hereby award the White Stripes 1 (one) kudo for being cool.
