Profiling

profilesystem.jpg

You may have noticed our new Profile system, rolled out a week ago, which segregates our commenters into two groups: those who have a profile (and who are identified by the name that they choose), and those who don't (identified, across the board, as a "guest").

In the interest of full disclosure, I didn't like the profile system when I was first told about it by Gothamist, our parent company; in fact, I objected to it pretty strongly. The system that you see on Torontoist today, however, is not only improved from the one that was first unveiled on Gothamist, but has a number of plusses that don't reveal themselves immediately. I know that registering is a bit of a hassle, but there are a ton of benefits:

  • You have to register once, and only once.
  • It takes less than a minute to sign up and confirm your membership, from start to finish. Seriously.
  • You're identified by the name of your choice when you post a comment on an article rather than as a "guest." If your username is already taken by someone else in the system (and isn't something like "Bob"), just e-mail me and let me know what display name you want. (Eventually, users will be able to edit their display names themselves, but this is a decent band-aid solution.)
  • There's no annoying "CAPTCHA" (those things where you have to type in what letters or numbers you see in a box) if you want to comment, even as a guest, and our system is way better than some other sites': across Gawker Media sites, for instance, you can't simply register—you have to post a comment that the administrators really, really like and only then will they approve your account.
  • You stay logged in, both on Torontoist and across the Gothamist network.
  • You get your own fancy-dancy profile page that lists your recent comments (and responses to those comments). Here's mine. Here's Marc's.
  • If you already had a Typekey account that you used to comment on Torontoist, you can simply import all your old comments made under it to the new system.
  • It all but cuts off comment spam, which is good for us, but even better for you—comments should show up on Torontoist much quicker and there shouldn't be any of those frustrating delays or double-posted comments.
  • There are lots of benefits yet to come; this is just the beginning. Gothamist is constantly working on improving the whole thing and welcomes feedback (which we've been giving 'em lots of ourselves).
So, please, be awesome and sign up for a profile today. If you are having any problems with the system, have any questions about how it works, or anything like that, please let us know, either by leaving a comment or sending us an e-mail.

On each point...

-Registering for anything isn't a "plus". It's just a thing. A thing that takes annoying time. Not much, but not a plus.

-Taking less than a minute... not a plus, again. Just a *thing*

-I can Identify by any name I want, at any time as a guest. I just need to type it at the end of a comment.

-No CAPTCHA is cool. Why not just go the AKISMET route, though?

-I live in Toronto. I don't give a shit about what happens across the Gothamist network.

-I've already got a Myspace page, a facebook page, and multiple other *pages*. Do I really care about having my own personal "Ist" page? No, but maybe that's just me.

-Import comments.. meh. Don't care enough. This is one of about 40 sites I frequent.

-Comments always showed up instantly. Never saw much spam to begin with.

-Benefits eh... again, who cares. Can we leave comments? Check. Can we sign as any name we want? See below to know for sure.

Anyways, this kinda reaks of you being told to publish something about a new system by your parents. Sorry, but it's just a new way of commenting on blog posts. Unless we weren't able to comment before, there aren't any new *features* that suddenly will make people comment when they didn't before. In fact, the new registration system can only deter people. At least there's a guest option.

And hey, it sure beats the blogTO comment system, which also works just fine, aside from the frequent 404 errors (but the comments get posted anyway, thankfully).

Greying out guest comments is really annoying. I, a registered cog in the Gothamist machine, shouldn't have to lean in and squint or highlight the text to read it.

Rek, Gothamist is in the process of changing that right now, after consulting with the editors. It will, at least for now, still be gray, just not tiny.

Ryan ("rytoid"), the idea is that it's an incentive to have all of your comments on Torontoist stored and filed as belonging to you. And sure, you can sign your name at the bottom of each post instead, but by the time you do that for like, four posts, you've used up as much time and effort as you would if you just signed up once.

I should clarify, too, that spam isn't really the biggest reason for the system's creation (we had a spam plugin running before that was pretty decent on Torontoist but not across the rest of the -ist sites). I know that Marc's original article played up the role that the profile system plays as an anti-spam measure (and there are benefits), but for me the incentive is really more in laying the foundation for a sturdier, more community-minded approach to the whole thing.

As for your mentioning that you've never had any problems leaving a comment...you're one of the lucky ones.

Is the greyed out, tiny guest text supposed to be so difficult to read that it encourages people to register?

As I just mentioned, Gothamist is in the process of changing the grayed-out comments right now, after consulting with the editors. They will still be gray, just not tiny, which is intended to differentiate guest comments from non-guest ones.

Alright, they're no longer tiny. Just gray.

Grey text + blue background = still illegible. :(

I'm tweaking that blue background right now to see what I can pull off...

been trying to move my typekey acct over for weeks. everytime I put in the auto-generated password after clicking the reset link in my email, I get an "Email verification has not yet been passed" error.

booooo.

what can I do? I'd much rather keep my username than come up with a new one.

Please e-mail me; I'll help get it all sorted out.
