Top Cop Says Less Cops Bad Idea, Fish Heads Are Deadly Weapons, And Hooray For People Named "Singh"

Toronto police chief says it's not right to scare the public by suggesting spending cuts to the police force. Also, the garbage commissioner says it's not right to scare the public by suggesting spending cuts to public sanitation and the head of Parks and Rec says it's not right to scare the public by suggesting spending cuts to public lawnmowing.

Cast finalized for Dirty Dancing, the musical. Very soon, Torontonians will thrill to performances of songs like "In The Catskills," "Go Back To Your Playpen," and "She's Seventeen (Does That Make It Statutory)."

Canadian plant food made from fish heads stopped at U.S. border because it's "a threat to homeland security." The terrorists want green and leafy plants! It's part of their master plan!

If your name is Singh or Kaur, now you can immigrate to Canada. Okay, does it blow anybody else's mind that people named Singh were previously non-qualified to immigrate here? Because it totally blows Torontoist's mind.

Apparently, Aileen Siu has resigned. Now, please let this story be over.

And the Jays shellacked the Twins last night 13-1.

It's not over until you kill it for good. You'
re going on about this like Michael Coren does about same-sex marriage. And the both of you, Torontoist and Coren, are sometimes so self-righteous.

I wouldn't say that two posts devoted to something -- one of them a significant scoop, the other, in my opinion, a pretty fair bit of analysis on the whole situation that was itself trying to downplay the incident -- and a mention in the news roundup today is really an example of us going overboard on our coverage of something. And bringing up Michael Coren so that you can compare us to him has nothing to do with anything.

People surnamed Kaur or Singh were certainly able to immigrate to Canada. It's just that they had to take a different (usually familial) surname to put on all the officical documentation. Incredibly unfair, yes, but it was not a strict prohibition, just a ridiculous misunderstanding. Torontoist's mind need not be blown.

The Singh issue is not nearly as bad as it sounds. Sikhs usually have a third name already, so it's not as if they had to make one up or something. Basically Immigration said, "look, you already have this third name, and it'll make our lives a lot easier if you use it on your application -- but if you'd rather not, that's okay too, but you might have to wait a bit longer". Not at all unreasonable.

I was gonna say, I talk to about 30 Singh's or Kaur's a day in my job, so I was a bit confused by this article.

Fewer cops, not "less cops." Fewer. Jeez.
