The Daily Photoist: Together

Every weekday, we pick an image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

Sepia tones, black borders, and a missing sky add to the atmosphere of a dense city space in this photo by MCXL5. A monochromatic colour scheme removes the distinction between individual buildings and effortlessly melds the thick electrical lines into the backdrop in such a manner that can only be expected from a major city.

Images such as this remind us why Toronto is often substituted for some of the great cities in the U.S., but it shouldn't be a surprise when we have a higher population density than New York. Taking to the roof to get away from a harried life in the Big Smoke isn't a bad idea, just don't be surprised if a few others have the same thought.

Haha, whoa, whoa now, let's not get ahead of ourselves. The GTA is not a "city"; only about half of it is really urban in character at all. The same goes for the New York metropolitan area. I can't stand when entire metro regions are counted for population when in most parts, the built form is single-family detached houses on curvy streets without a hope of public transit for miles.

The City of New York and Toronto proper occupy nearly the same amount of square kilometres. At 8.2 million, New York's population density is three times that of Toronto's at just 2.7 million in the same space.

Phew!

I was curious as to how long it would take to get called out on that. There was the very deliberate exclusion of City to naming New York. Considering the website is aimed at young urban professionals, their own audience would easily be able to see the faults in their listing.
