The Daily Photoist: Japan here we come!

Every weekday, we pick an image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

At 3,340 metres, Runway 23 is the longest airstrip at Pearson International Airport, and watching jets land and take off from Airport Road is an awe-inspiring sight. A lounge in a nearby hotel was named for it, and "two three" was even romanticized in a 1970s song recorded by clarinetist Henry Cuesta. Some planespotters are so acutely skillful that they can identify the make of aircraft from far away simply by the engine sound or the appearance of the landing lights.

We love this framing of Air Canada Flight 001 as it takes off for Tokyo yesterday afternoon, captured by Flickr pool contributor News46. The two enormous engines of the Boeing 777 echo the round lamps mounted to the approach lighting system (ALS), and the cloudy background gives a striking texture to the geometry in the photo. It's been more than a hundred years since the first flight at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, but aviation technology is still just as fascinating today.
