Globe Life Exhausting Themed Material

dorapirate.jpgFor some of us, Tuesdays can only mean one thing. Yes, "Family and Relationships" day over at Globe Life, the Globe's lifestyle section that was introduced in the April redesign. But it seems like they’re having some trouble finding material, because yesterday’s Globe Life section featured not one, but two pieces on what to do when you accidentally offend a colleague, either by mistakenly hitting "Reply" instead of "Forward" (à la Aileen Siu), or by talking shmack about a co-worker’s Scientology beliefs while he’s standing right behind you. Besides the fact that these are essentially the same article, shouldn’t they be filed under "Workplace," which is Monday’s theme?

In any case, their advice for repairing the damage of an email fumble is "Beg forgiveness." And their advice for appeasing the Scientologist who overheard you hating on Xenu is to take him out for a drink. Of course.

Our advice for the Globe Life editors? Lose the themes, or at least come up with some cooler ones. How about choosing themes based on five-year-old birthday parties? We’d be much more inclined to read Globe Life if Monday was "Dora the Explorer" day and Tuesday was "Pirates." And Wednesday could be "Dora/Pirates."

I was skeptical about "Globe Life" at first, but I've grown to really like it. I usually read the paper in a fe chunks over the day (morning commute, lunch, commute home, etc) and it's nice to be able to easily choose whether I want to read hard or soft news first depending on my mood.

That said, I have to admit I hadn't even noticed that there were daily themes. Also, I quite enjoyed the Scientology article.

I have to say that Globe Life is pretty awful and it's just a matter of time until they cancel it.

I bet not...

It seems like ever since Metro came along, the two decent dailies (imo) have been fighting it pretty hard. The Star seems to be trying ever harder to emulate it, while the Globe seems to be trying ever harder to distinguish itself from it. My money's on the Star scrapping their changes soon, and the Globe staying the course.

Metro is operated by a Torstar and CanWest joint venture (and Metro International S.A.).

Scientology is there to be mocked, not to be understood over drinks after work, as far as I'm concerned.
