It’s so funny that you are posting this. A group of us got yelled at for stopping to talk to friends on the sidewalk last Friday night.

    That’s why it’s called a sideWALK. Not a sideSTAND!

What is funnier…people who will block a walkway… and then when you walk through, between, around them, THEY think YOU are being rude. People do this in hallways too, they will have little impromtu meetings right in the middle of a hallway or doorway and force you to do some yoga, contortinist move to get around them, and then look at you like you have some kind of a problem. All the while you’re politely saying “excuse me” when on the inside you are crushing their heads!

Is it really that comfortable lumbering down the street holding hands on a hot day whilst carrying shopping bags in the others (which makes them even walk slower)? The last thing I’d want to do when walking on a crowded sidewalk and carrying other stuff is hold someone’s sweaty hand.

I admit, if i’m a hurry and every obstacle seems to be in my way, I feel the sidewalk rage welling.
What makes me laugh is people who yell at others to get out of their way, when there’s a good 5-10 metres of space between them and other pedestrians. I guess some people require a plastic bubble to walk down the street to avoid humanity in general.

The best is when 4+ people decide to walk shoulder to shoulder. And sauntering down the stairs 3 abreast. And weaving back and forth. And stopping at the top or bottom of escalators.
In Korea there is absolutely no sense of personal space, and the local strain of Confucianism means they completely ignore everyone they aren’t the family or friends of (우리), so walking on the sidewalk means constantly colliding with people and mutually agreeing the other (남) doesn’t exist.

People just generally get out of my way when they see me coming. Perhaps it’s the steam coming out of my ears?

I’m quite relieved to see this cartoon. I just moved to Toronto, and thought that there was something wrong with *me* for constantly having to manouver around others like a gymnast. Finding out that it is the people around me makes me feel much better.
