Do you ever feel that you spend your entire day getting shit upon? Even Great Britain's former Prime Minister Sir Winston Churchill can't get no respect in this shot by Flickr pool contributor beemphoto.com. We love the indignant expression on the statue's face, almost as if he's saying, "I refused to capitulate to Germany and this is the thanks I get?"
Created by Croatian-born sculptor Oscar Nemon and located at the southwest corner of Nathan Phillips Square, the statue was presented to the City of Toronto in 1967 by the Churchill Memorial Committee. In 2004, the statue was refurbished and rededicated as part of the 60th anniversary of D-Day, which included the addition of park benches and four educational plaques. In a characteristic defiant pose that resembles the famous image by Armenian-Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh, the statue is often a surprise to tourists and Torontonians alike, but is intended to be a reminder how "his faith and leadership inspired free men to fight in every quarter of the globe in triumph of Justice and Liberty," as inscribed on the podium.
