More Pride DVD Prize Packs!

Pride07_DVD2.jpg
Our other Pride DVD giveaway is still underway with lots of entries, but we’ve got two more Pride-related prize packs to give out—one for the gay boys (or the girls who love them) and one for the gay girls (or the boys who love them). Read-on to see what’s in the booty chest this time, courtesy of Defiant Entertainment.

Prize Pack 1: For The Boys

Sugar (bottom right) is based on stories from the 1980s queer punk zines J.D.s by Bruce LaBruce. Starring teen heartthrob Brendan Fehr (CSI: Miami, Roswell, Final Destination) as a drug-addicted Toronto street hustler and André Noble as the restless suburban teen who falls in love with him, the film also stars Sarah Polley as a pregnant street kid and Maury Chaykin as a john who likes to get punished in the kitchen. The film suffered tragic news in 2004 just weeks after the film’s debut when 25-year-old lead actor Noble died of accidental poisoning during a trip to his family home in Newfoundland.
Nominated for four Independent Spirit Awards, Brother To Brother (top left) is a drama invoking the glory days of the Harlem Renaissance. Starring Anthony Mackie (Million Dollar Baby) and Daniel Sunjata (Rescue Me), the film tells the story of an elderly poet who inspires a young black gay artist that he finds in a homeless shelter.
In 200 American, Conrad is a control-freak CEO who hires a hustler, Tyler, to work in his company following the $200 one-night stand. Things get complicated as Tyler falls for his supervisor (not Conrad), while Conrad tries to manage his relationship with his ex.

Prize Pack 2: For The Girls

There are dangers and delights for dating in downtown Dublin, and Goldfish Memory (top right) explores the complex relationships of love—gay, straight, and somewhere in-between. When Clara sees her boyfriend kissing Isolde, it sets off a chain reaction of relationship drama among her group of friends.
It’s In The Water takes place in the small southern town of Azalea Springs, Texas, where big hair is rampant and the local country club sets the rules. When a bunch of lesbians come out of the closet suddenly, the town goes into a frenzy with the rumour that something in the drinking water is turning people gay, so the hysterical townsfolk start picketing, hiding their children and setting up ex-gay “Turn or Burn” meetings. It’s In The Water is a satire of how a town becomes crippled by homophobia and must face or deny their own realities.
Laughing Matters is a performance film featuring four women who pioneered lesbian stand-up comedy: Kate Clinton, Karen Williams, Marga Gomez and Suzanne Westenhoefer. Alternating between interviews and the stand-up acts, the women discuss the experiences of being lesbian before the concept of lesbian chic entered the mainstream. At a time when being “out” onstage was still controversial, these comics became accidental activists.
In the wry Finnish drama Producing Adults, Venla is a fertility counselor who desperately wants her own child, much to the disagreement of her speed-skater boyfriend Antero, who secretly solicits a vasectomy. Venla’s sympathetic female doctor colleague Satu suggests an after-hours insemination at the clinic which becomes complicated when Venla discovers feelings for Satu.
Val is 40 and freshly-divorced in Wave Babes (bottom left), which finds her reuniting with her old surfer pals for a reckless weekend in Malibu—until her ex-husband shows up with his new trophy wife, leading the friends to team up for a wet-and-wild catfight. Inspired by films like Blue Crush, Wave Babes is a campy lesbian parody of the surf genre. The DVD box says, “Something’s going in and out, and it’s not the tide…” Oh, my!

The contest will run until next Thursday, June 28, and entrants must be 18+ with a Canadian mailing address. Winners will be contacted via email.
