What Bullet Holes Look Like

2007_05_25Bullet_Holes.jpg
Remember when, if someone was shot on the streets of the GTA, neighbours would appear on TV saying something like “I’m shocked—you just don’t expect things like this to happen here?” Those were the good old days in Kensington Market. Violent crime has always been part of the area (usually it’s attributed to drugs or alcohol), but a spate of seemingly random shootings has neighbours a little freaked out. On May 15, a 24-year-old man was shot in the head at Augusta St. and College St. And the above images of five of the approximately 18 bullets fired in a shootout at Carr St. and Denison Ave. last Sunday morning. 19-year-old Jonathan Musse was found in alley suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Musse died of his injuries on Thursday, making him Toronto’s 27th homicide victim.

What are we doing to each other?
I guess because I live in Americ-uh, and consider this country a lost cause, that I am still holding out hope for Canada. Really, you guys are all I have, if you follow us down, then I have no hope left or anything to believe in. I know you have always had crime, I know you’re not perfect, but this is something I expect from the US. My standards and expectations for this country have all but died.
I get doubly depressed when I read or hear about the level of violence increasing up there.
I really hope this turns around. I honestly believe you are the world’s last hope. It’s not the US, I can tell you that much.

Carr and Denison isn’t really in Kensington Market, it’s located in between Alexandra Park and Atkinson co op. (A few blocks south of Kensington)
I don’t want to start a flurry of comments but I have to point out that the co op is absolutely covered in CCTV cameras, but I don’t think any of them cover this particular intersection.
Didn’t somebody already point out that crime usually gets displaced a short distance away from the cameras after they get installed? I don’t know the reasoning behind this shooting, but the existence of cameras didn’t deter anybody from commiting a serious crime (if the perpetrator even knew about them – they are much less conspicuous than the recently installed police cameras).

this site is the only one that bothered to mention that this amazing young man passed on from his injuries…

The Toronto majors (Sun, Star) did report on his death. The Sun called him a “gang associate” while the Star skirted…

Has anyone else heard of other recent, uh, incidents in Kensington/area?
A friend witnesses a gang beating (gang in the large-group-of-people sense) at Dundas and Spadina a few weeks ago and I’ve heard of a few others being mugged/beaten around Dundas/Augusta in recent months… I don’t want this to be a growing trend for the neighbourhood…

As terrible as it is, Toronto’s homicide rate pales in comparison by proportion to that of major US cities. Last I checked, the yearly homicide numbers for New York City are within a stone’s throw of that for all of Canada – not accounting proportion either. Until we reach a day when city newspapers stop covering homicides on the front page, I don’t think it’s as bad as it seems. Yes there is a gun problem, yes violence is bad, no cameras won’t stop it.

I used to work with George – and you might not believe it, but he was always a pretty nice guy. I don’t agree with what he did, but my understanding is that the attack by his psychotic sister was pretty severe. Once he killed her, he should have done the right thing and turned himself in. He probably suffers from a similar condition to his sister – but you know what the Bible says – judge not.
