Sam's Closes, Dollar Rises, Conan Surprises
Sam the Record Man is closing its Yonge Street store on June 30. Remember when Sam's was the only place you could get a cassette of The Lowest of the Low's Shakespeare My Butt? Remember cassettes?
Two high profile cases got their day in court yesterday. Wing-Piao Dumani Ross and Alexander Ryazanov, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the 2006 death of cabbie Tahir Khan. The pair were sentenced to house arrest for a year, 150 hours of community service, two years probation, and are prohibited from driving for four years. And Daniel Sylvester was found guilty of second degree murder of his next-door-neighbour Alicia Ross. The conviction carries an automatic sentence of life in prison, with a minimum of 10 to 15 years of jail time.
Speaking of long waits, the Canadian Dollar rose to 93.37 U.S. cents yesterday. That's the highest it has climbed since Aug. 1, 1977.
Speaking of 1977, that was the year the Blue Jays made their major league baseball debut. Last night, they beat the New York Yankees 3 to 2.
And finally, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was in town to salute the wines of California, singing the praises of stem cell research to protect young John Connor so he can grow up and stop the robots from destroying the earth. Except that the robots are pollution and we are all John Connor.

Ten Years Ago. The Machines Who Rule The Future Sent An Unstoppable Terminator To Assassinate The Yet Unborn John Connor. They Failed. In 1991. The Machines Will Try Again!
Noooo! I love the Yonge Street Sam's! Now where will I browse without buying? Oh. Sorry Sam's, my bad. (Half kidding, I did buy DVDs there.) At least the one in my hometown, Belleville, will remain open.
"house arrest for a year, 150 hours of community service, two years probation, and are prohibited from driving for four years."
What an outrageously lenient sentence for 2 jackasses who murdered a guy with their cars.
How in the fuck can you guys not devote an entire standalone piece the news of Sam's closing?
Amato's is/was half the Hogtown institution Sam's is/was.
Do better. Please.
Hold yer horses, Mitre Saw. It's coming.
