The Daily Photoist: The Death of Spiderman

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It’s our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

Billowing in the wind, his white cape was won from a battle just moments ago and this final act will finish it all. Having pinned down Spiderman, he takes aim for a calculated blow with a purple pillow.
A great shot by Word Freak of a moment caught during the Newmindspace Pillow Fight, but is this the start of many other similar photos appearing? With the number of photographers nearly overtaking participants, there is a higher difficulty in attaining that unique shot. Torontoist’s own David Topping was part of the group surrounding the kids as the event dispersed and recounts at least five or six photographers in the bunch. “A few guys chanted “Photo op! Photo op!” One photographer who saw the crowd actually visibly got quite pissed off and said something like “I’m gonna be original and NOT take a photo of this.” One guy even posed pointing at the kids surrounded by photographers while his friend took a photo,” he says. But who can really resist two cute kids mugging it up for the camera.

Aw, how cute! He must be getting revenge for starring in such a horrible film! His shirt takes the cake: Canada hates Spiderman :)
As a person who was in the melee the entire time, I didn’t really notice all the cameras, just being repeatedly hit with all kinds of pillows, but I agree, pillow fighting can be fun to watch! We did encourage spectators to bring pillows in case they decided to be participants as well, and some listened. However, the comparison to the Pillow Fight League cannot be avoided: their event, while awesome, is purely a spectator sport.

Whomever that pretentious photographer dick was, he needs to get over himself, pronto.

I was standing just outside the circle of photographers, and there were at least twice that many, enough that with a single shot from each, one could put together a decent bullet-time effect.

Thanks Jonathan, you’re probably right — my estimate was pretty conservative.
Also, I should mention that those shoes on the far far right (white & black Pumas) are mine, with rolled-up gray jeans. I had my camera out but I wasn’t taking photos. It was strange!

Oh, come on! The shot is simply great! wonderful angle and capture of emotion in motion.
