The Daily Photoist: Standing His Ground

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

Yesterday, we featured the Toronto FC in the Daily Photoist, but we can't forget how spring also reveals our Boys of Summer. This minimalist shot of Jays centrefielder Vernon Wells was captured by dave_in_t_o, and we like how it creates a solitary, almost lonely moment within 56.5 million raucous cubic feet of stadium.

The artificial grass at the Rogers Centre was switched in 2005 from the rock-hard AstroTurf to the less abrasive and more grasslike FieldTurf—a Montreal company—which consists of frayed tufts of polyethylene fibre in a recycled tire rubber backing. To the disdain of some players, FieldTurf was also installed in the Toronto FC's BMO Field, making it the only Major League Soccer team playing on synthetic turf in a soccer-specific facility.
