Falwell Passes On, Bill Clinton Announces Big Environmental Upgrades, and Look Out! Marble!

Falwellhustlera.jpgJerry Falwell dead at 73. This is true: last week he appeared on CNN and told Christine Amanpour that he was praying for an additional twenty years of life to "complete his task" and that he felt optimistic about getting it. The moral here is that prayers are always answered, but that sometimes the answer is "no."

Bill Clinton to unveil energy plan for Toronto and other major cities. Major global banking institutions have committed $1 billion USD to finance environmental upgrades for municipal buildings in major cities to make them more energy efficient. This is really great, until you realize that combined among all these Major Global Banking Institutions that $1 billion is almost pocket change (Canada's big banks profited $12 billion in 2005 alone). But something > nothing, right?

CPR workers walk off the job across Canada. A spokesman for the Canadian Association of Manufacturers and Exporters said "We can't afford to see continuing series of strikes in our transportation sector, and then pretend that we have an efficiently working logistics system here in Canada," which of course ignores the fact that the railworkers are striking because they feel they are underpaid and not, you know, for fun.

Large slab of marble falls off First Canadian Place. Zero squashed as of this writing, but if somebody is suddenly squashed by the large piece of marble, Torontoist will update, you can bet your bottom dollar!

And a rookie pitcher's debut spells a win for the Blue Jays. Which is good, because they could use some wins!

I love campari and sodas.

that's where the similarities to me and mr. falwell end though.

American evangelical twit Jerry Falwell AND ads for the American Automobile Association in California on Torontoist today? God Bless America and its domination over Canadian media and culture! Even the alternative (blogs) aren't immune.
