Whole Foods Market Is Giving Back

2007_04_17wholefoods.jpgTomorrow is the Yorkville Whole Foods Market Community Support Day. In celebration of Earth Week, 5% of their net sales will go to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA), whose mission is to ensure that our “Living City” is built upon a natural foundation of healthy rivers and shorelines, greenspace and biodiversity, and sustainable communities. Staff from the TRCA will be on hand tomorrow so you can ask questions, and get informed.
Whole Foods Market also has a carbon foot print reduction program called “The Whole Earth Weigh-In” running for the month of April. A carbon footprint calculator—BeGreen from Green Mountain Energy Company—is available online, and you can even track your progress as you make changes in your lifestyle. As well, you will find information and coupons to encourage you to buy products from Whole Foods Market affiliated green companies.
For many of us, Whole Foods Market in Yorkville is a place to go occasionally, when we want to find that exclusive organic product we saw in a magazine, or maybe catch a glimpse of an A-list celeb making a snack run. Tomorrow, knowing that your dollars are going towards the preservation of our natural resources, is a great time to indulge.

Credit where it’s due and such, but it is 5% of net sales, not gross. 5% of gross sales would be an impressive gesture – 5% of net is merely smart public relations.

    From Investopedia:
Net Sales: The amount of sales generated by a company after the deduction of returns, allowances for damaged or missing goods and any discounts allowed. The sales number reported on a company’s financial statements is a net sales number, reflecting these deductions.
Why is this so much less impressive than gross?

Or, support local farmers by shopping at one of Toronto’s markets and give a donation to the TRCA at 100% value: http://www.trca.on.ca/conservation_foundation/

Sorry Cord, the others are right; instead of supporting Whole Foods, why not get involved with http://www.foodshare.net? I’m picking up my organic box on Thursday. It supports local farmers too!

Just how much of the products being sold there were grown locally, and how many trucks and planes and trains and ships did it take to bring the rest?
