The Daily Photoist: brickworks

Each weekday morning, we pick a recent image from the Torontoist Flickr Pool and feature it here on the site. It's our way to give the many excellent photographers in our pool the attention they deserve!

This photo reminds us of some ultra-realistic version of arcade hit "Breakout," which we can occasionally be found playing on our iPod on the streetcar.

At first, we weren't sure exactly how we felt about this rather graphic image from Toronto photographer Tyson Williams. The colour palette is the sort of thing you'd expect from a designer's handbook of pleasing colour schemes, and had us wondering if this was a result of some Photoshop trickery.

But work artificially produced in Photoshop often has a "too perfect" sheen that gives the game away -- and the branch that hangs down in the upper-middle of the image, while initially distracting, has become our favourite part. It offers a slight sense of the "real."

Still, the photo makes us want to retire back for another round of that Breakout game. Just imagine coming across a Tetris wall, or a Space Invaders one.

I believe this is a photo of the (partially) painted brick wall of a store called "It's Up to You".

It's on the second floor of a building that also houses the "Chick N Joy" restaurant, at Queen Street East and Woodfield.
