Kensington Goes To Blazes

2007_04_16Baldwin_fire.jpgTorontoist Flickr Pool member snapparker has posted this shot of the aftermath of Tuesday morning's three-alarm fire at the corner of Baldwin and Spadina, right where Kensington Market meets Chinatown. The conflagration started in a rooming house above stores at 368 Spadina Ave. Flames quickly spread to neighbouring businesses. In all, over 100 firefighters and 30 trucks were called in to battle the blaze.

Torontoist contributor Shaun Merritt spoke to a firefighter at the scene who stated that one of the people rescued was hanging out of a window and another was found on the rooftop.

One person was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The cause of the fire is unknown. While the extent of the damage to the buildings is still under investigation, at one point, emergency crews were forced to pull back as a section of wall collapsed and bricks and mortar crashed to the sidewalk below. Says Merritt, "It seems the upstairs residences were greatly damaged and the downstairs shops much less so."

As a result of the fire, Spadina Avenue was closed southbound between College and Dundas until late Tuesday morning.
